Orange Rally to Upset #30 Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After falling behind 2-0, the Syracuse women's tennis team (8-12, 5-8 ACC) came from behind to top No. 30 Wake Forest (16-8, 6-6 ACC), 4-3, on Friday night in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Wake Forest claimed the doubles point with quick 6-0 wins at the No. 2 and 3 spots to take an early lead. The Demon Deacons followed that up with the first win in singles to go ahead, 2-0. Maria Tritou earned the Orange's first win in straight sets to cut the lead in half.

'Cuse lost the No. 2 singles match, but went on to win three straight points to clinch the match. Dina Hegab began the streak with a 6-3, 6-2 win for her 10th singles win of the season. Libi Mesh bounced back after dropping her first set to win the next two and tie the score.

The final point came down to the No. 3 match. Anna Shkudun had lost the first set, 7-6, but evened things up with a 6-3 win in the second. Shkudun carried the momentum to a 6-2 third set win to clinch the match for the Orange.

Friday's win is the second victory over a ranked opponent for Syracuse this season. 'Cuse beat No. 42 Miami on April 9 in Syracuse. It was also the eighth one-point match for Syracuse this season.

The Orange will finish the regular season on Sunday against No. 3 North Carolina. Match time is set for 1 p.m. in Chapel Hill.
