Three ‘Cuse players go yard in midweek doubleheader
HAMILTON, N.Y. – A trio of home runs at Eaton Street Field highlighted Wednesday's doubleheader, as Syracuse (27-18, 7-10 ACC) shutout Colgate (12-25-1, 2-10 Patriot League), 10-0, in game one and lost game two, 3-2, to split the midweek doubleheader.
Game One
Freshman Toni Martin had herself a game in the first contest, as she was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a home run. Sophomore Alicia Hansen was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBI, while junior Sammy Fernandez was 2-for-4 with two runs.
Senior Sydney O'Hara tallied the other yard ball of the game, as she was 1-for-2 with a run and two RBI on the game.
Freshman Alexa Romero (11-7) dealt eight strikeouts and two walks in the five-inning shutout win, her sixth of the year.
A two RBI home run from O'Hara in the first inning and a solo homer from Martin in the third gave the Orange an early 3-0 lead. Hansen continued the SU scoring with an RBI double to the back wall to bring 'Cuse ahead, 4-0.
The fifth inning proved the difference in game one, as Hansen began the six-run scoring spree with an RBI single to bring Fernandez home. Faith Cain followed it with an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to bring Hansen home in for the 6-0 lead.
Hannah Dossett added a two RBI single to left field to give 'Cuse the 8-0 lead, before an RBI single to left field from Martinez brought in pinch runner Abby Thibodeau home for the run. Martin closed out the inning with an RBI single up the middle to give the Orange a final 10-0 advantage.
Game Two
Cain got things started for the Orange in the third inning, as she claimed a bases-loaded two-out RBI walk after being hit by the pitch.
The Raiders came back to put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth, taking the first lead of the doubleheader over the Orange, 3-1.
With two outs on the board, senior Alyssa Dewes nailed a solo home run to left field to bring the game within one run, 3-2.
Syracuse was unable to push extra innings as it dropped game two, 3-2, to split the doubleheader.
Three Syracuse pitchers combined for eight strikeouts, as Romero led the way with four. AnnaMarie Gatti (8-7) threw two, while O'Hara added a pair.
Fernandez was 2-for-3 with a run and Hansen was 2-for-3. Dewes finished the night 1-for-1 with an RBI home run.
The Orange return home to Skytop Softball Stadium for a three-game series against Virginia Tech beginning on Friday, April 28. The first pitch it set to be thrown at 4 p.m.
