'Cuse Downed by #27 NC State; Hosts Miami Sunday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's tennis team battled with No. 27 NC State, but ultimately came up with a 5-2 loss at Drumlins Tennis Club on Friday afternoon. The Orange will be back in action on Sunday when they host No. 42 Miami at 11 a.m. at Drumlins.
The Wolfpack won the doubles point with 6-2 and 6-3 wins at No. 1 and No. 2. In singles, five of the six matches required a third set to determine the outcome and two went into a third-set tiebreaker.
At the top spot, No. 79 Miranda Ramirez faced a tough competitor in No. 59 Martina Frantova. After falling behind in the first set, Ramirez battled back to the second set, 6-4. The freshman jumped out to a lead in the third, but Frantova bounced back for a 7-5 win. The loss ended Ramirez's winning streak at 12 matches.
Gabriela Knutson raced out to a 6-4 win in the first set of her match, but fell, 6-0, in the second. The third set came down to a tiebreaker and NC State was able to claim the point. Anna Shkudun was defeated at the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-4.
Maria Tritou rallied back after losing the first set to claim the second, 6-2, at No. 4. The third set came down to the wire, determined by a 7-4 tiebreaker in the Wolfpack's favor.
Dina Hegab edged her opponent in the first set in a tiebreaker, but fell in the second set. The pair began the third set, but the NC State student-athlete retired, giving Dina her seventh win of the season.
Libi Mesh forced a third set after being down early in the match. Mesh dropped the first set and was down 5-2 in the second, but rallied back to claim a 7-5 win. She was up, 3-0, in the third when her opponent retired.
Syracuse (6-10, 3-6 ACC) will host the Hurricanes (5-9, 3-5 ACC) on Sunday. The match is set to begin at 11 a.m.
