SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse women's tennis team earned a 4-3 win against No. 42 Miami on Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Tennis Club.
"It was a gutsy performance all around by the ladies today," head coach Younes Limam said. "It was nice to fight out that doubles point. Then we got off to a really strong start in singles and stepped up at key moments to finish it off."
The day got underway with Syracuse claiming the doubles point. Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez fell behind 2-0 early in the match, but bounced back to win 6-3. Maria Tritou and Nicole Mitchell clinched the point with a 7-5 win.
Knutson won her singles match in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No. 14 Sinead Lohan. Knutson is now 9-7 on the season and has won seven of her last 10 matches. Libi Mesh battled back after being down in her first set to earn an 8-6 tiebreaking win. She won her second set, 6-2.
Tritou once again showed grit after losing the first set. Tritou bounced back to win the next two, 6-2, 6-1 for the win and clinched the win for the Orange.
The win was the first over Miami in program history for Syracuse. The Orange are now 1-9 all-time against the Hurricanes.
The Orange will be back in action next week against Virginia Tech and No. 15 Duke. Syracuse will travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take on the Hokies on Thursday at 11 a.m. Then 'Cuse will host the Blue Devils on Saturday at 11 a.m. for Senior Day. It will be the final home match of the season for the Orange.
