Strong Second Half Leads U.S. Past Canada at FIL World Cup

Hill-Donhauser Leads Haudenosaunee By Italy
GUILDFORD, England – The United States scored 14 unanswered goals to defeat Canada, 17-3, and remain undefeated in pool play on Sunday, July 16 at the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Women's World Cup in Guildford, England. The Haudenosaunee Nationals defeated Italy, 11-10, to remain unbeaten in Pool B.

Both Team USA and Team Canada entered Sunday's game with 3-0 records in Pool A. The Canadians hung with the U.S. for the first 17 minutes of the game and rising senior Taylor Gait's free-position goal cut Team USA's lead to 3-2. Kayla Treanor scored her only goal of the game six minutes later, which was the first of 14 straight goals for the United States. Michelle Tumolo assisted on Brooke Griffin's goal and then found the back of the net with 32 seconds left in the first half to give Team USA a 7-2 halftime lead.

The U.S. offense continued to dominate in the second half and Tumolo's goal with 6:38 remaining extended the lead to 17-2. Rising senior Alie Jimerson recorded the final goal of the game for Canada for the 17-3 final. Tumolo was named Player of the Match after posting two goals, an assist, three ground balls and three draw controls.

The Haudenosaunee Nationals scored with 51 seconds on the clock to defeat Italy, 11-10. Erin Francis scored three straight goals to give the Haudenosaunee a 10-7 lead with 6:11 remaining, but Italy answered with three straight goals to tie the game at 10-10. With the victory, the Haudenosaunee improve to 4-0 in Pool B. Goalkeeper Amber Hill-Donhauser earned the Player of the Match award after recording 22 saves. Francis finished with seven points (3g, 4a), while Awehiyo Thomas added a goal.

All three teams will have Monday off before returning to action on Tuesday, July 18.
