SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse volleyball assistant coach Matt Johann led the USA Girls Youth Continental Red team to a bronze medal at the USA High Performance Championships this past July in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Johann has been involved with USA High Performance since 2012 and served as a head coach for the Girls Youth Continental Program at the tournament.
Johann's USA Girls Youth Continental Red team consisted of players from across the country. They only had five days of practice to prepare for the championship event that drew teams from all over the world. Creating a team dynamic was essential.
"Traveling and getting with new teams is always fun because you have different dynamics that fit into each team," Johann said. "When we were down at the High Performance Championships, we had our team for a longer time and it was a really good experience to have the right amount of differences."
"It shows that what you do off the court shows on the court. If you can be a team that gets along well because you are allowed to be yourself, then on the court everybody just lets things go and you can build confidence in the volleyball aspect."
Creating a positive team dynamic will be essential for Syracuse this year as the team consists of student-athletes from seven different states and six different nations.
"One of the best experiences I had this summer was learning more about team dynamics. I hope to use my experience to continue to build on the dynamics that we've created at Syracuse over the last three years that I've been here."
Johann also served as an associate head coach for the Girls Select A2 Invitation Program in Colorado Springs, Colo. He was responsible for creating practice plans and logistics for the 127 athletes in attendance.
The Orange host the Syracuse Tournament to open up the 2017 season. 'Cuse will host Siena, Grand Canyon, Niagara and Colgate on Aug. 25-26 at the Women's Building. Admission to the event is free.
