SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse tennis team was in action for the first time this fall, competing in both the Milwaukee Tennis Classic and the West Point Invitational over the weekend. Five Orange athletes made Finals appearances in the tournaments with Maria Tritou winning the B Singles tournament in West Point.
Â
Sophomore Miranda Ramirez was the only Orange in attendance at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic, the longest-running tennis event outside the NCAA tournament. She was seeded fourth in the field of 32, competing three consecutive days for Syracuse.
Â
The San Antonio, Texas native cruised to the Finals, winning three of her four matches in two sets. Ramirez faced Miami's Sinead Lohan in the Finals on Sunday, battling through three sets but ultimately falling, 6-2, 4-6, 2-6.
Â
The Orange sent five athletes to the West Point Invitational with Anna Shkudun, Tritou, Ester Mesh and Nicole Mitchell competing in the A, B, C, and D Singles, respectively. Junior Dina Hegab also competed in the C Singles for Syracuse, earning the third seed in her bracket.
Â
Shkudun, Mesh and Mitchell all received first seed nods and advanced to the Finals in their respective brackets. Shkudun was unable to start the match due to injury forcing a walkover while Mesh and Mitchell took their matches to three sets each but ultimately came up short. Hegab advanced to the C Singles quarterfinals but was overpowered by Seton Hall's Melody Tall, who bested Mesh in the Finals.
Â
In the Doubles category, both the pairing of Tritou and Mitchell, and the duo of Hegab and Mesh were seeded first in the A and B Doubles, respectively. Tritou and Mitchell made an appearance in the Finals but were outbid 6-1 by the pair from Fordham. Hegab and Mesh prevailed in the B Doubles, topping the Lehigh duo of Casey Zhong and Christina Auyeung, 6-1 to take the Finals victory.
Â
The tennis team will have a weekend off before heading to Buffalo for the Buffalo Invitational and Los Angeles for the Riviera/ITA All-Americans Championships.
