SYRACUSE, N.Y. -Â The Orange return to Tennity for the first time since Dec. 5 to take on No. 6 Cornell in a midweek match-up. Syracuse carries momentum into the contest after knocking off No. 9 Robert Morris on the road on Jan. 6.
Â
Last Time Out
The Orange opened the 2018 calendar year on the road at No. 9 Robert Morris. Despite getting off to a slow start in game one, Syracuse senior Alysha Burriss notched a pair of goals for the Orange, her first two-goal game of the season. The Colonials came out ahead in game one but 'Cuse rebounded in game two, pinning four goals on RMU.
Â
Senior captain Stephanie Grossi scored twice for Syracuse in game two in addition to goals by Brooke Avery and Jessica DiGirolamo, the latter who tallied her first collegiate goal. Freshman Edith D'Astous-Moreau earned her first collegiate start in goal for the Orange in game two, making 24 stops between the pipes.
Â
Series History
The Orange and the Big Red's in-state rivalry dates back to 2010 as the teams have met nine times before in program history. Cornell has come out on top in eight of the nine outings, including four Big Red wins at Tennity. The only win for Syracuse came in the first meeting between the schools on Jan. 5, 2010 when the Orange pulled off a 2-1 overtime victory.
Â
The two teams met once last season with Cornell emerging victorious, 7-2. Current junior Allie Munroe recorded two points in the outing, tallying a goal and an assist in the game. Grossi has found marked success against Cornell, notching three assists and a goal in three games played against the Big Red.
Â
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell sits at 8-6-1 this season with a 2-2-1 mark in non-conference action. The Big Red come in at No. 6 in the USCHO.com Poll and have been ranked in 10 straight polls dating back to Oct. 16. Four of Cornell's six losses this season have come at the hands of ranked opponents, including a two-game sweep by No. 1 Wisconsin.
Â
As a team, Cornell is averaging 25.7 shots per game and 2.40 goals scored per game. Sophomore Kristin O'Neill paces the Big Red in points with 17 (six goals, 11 assists) on the season while Madlynne Mills leads the team in scoring with nine goals. Junior Marlene Boissonnault has suited up in goal for Cornell in 13 of their 16 games, tallying a .925 save percentage on the season.
Double or Nothing
Two-goal games have been a theme for the Orange this season. Four times this year has an Orange player recorded two scores in an outing. Most recently, seniors Burriss and Grossi each posted two-goal games against Robert Morris.
Â
Grossi recorded a two-goal outing earlier this season, notching two scores against conference foe Penn State on Nov. 10. Avery is the only other Orange to record a two-goal game this year, tallying two against RIT on Nov. 18.Â
Up Next
The Orange hit the road once more to take on Penn State for the final series with the Nittany Lions in the 2017-18 regular season. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Jan. 19 and 20, respectively.
