Syracuse, N.Y. – On Sept. 23 Heather (Hess) Sell and her 2008 teammates stepped on the field together at J.S. Coyne Stadium for the first time in a decade. Sell was Syracuse's starting goalkeeper on the 2008 field hockey team that reached the NCAA Final Four, the first national semifinals appearance in program history.
"My time at 'Cuse was a lot of fun and hard work," Sell said. "Making it to the Final Four my senior year was nothing I had ever thought was going to happen after my freshman season. Ange [Bradley] came in and completely changed the mindset and the expectations of the program, making us so much more than we thought possible."
Hess was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year in 2008 and started all 24 games for the Orange. She led Syracuse to a 22-2 season and was named womensfieldhockey.com Third Team All-America. She was an All-BIG EAST First Team and Tournament Team selection and posted a 1.11 goals-against average during her senior campaign in 2008.
"The Final Four team was so special," Sell added. "We all wanted to make it to the national championship and none of us knew how to give up. It just wasn't a thing, so we did whatever it took to get us where we wanted to be. We didn't quite make it all the way but the Final Four was quite an achievement and I am so honored to have been a part of that team."
After graduating from Syracuse with a bachelor's degree in health and exercise science, Sell returned home to Lilitz, Pa., became the assistant field hockey and softball coach at her alma mater Warwick High School for nine years.
Recently married, Sell moved to Middletown, Delaware, where she resides with her husband and three cats. She works as a behavior interventionist in an emotional support high school classroom.
The achievements of the 2008 team were celebrated on campus Sept. 21-23 with a recognition of the Syracuse Field Hockey alumnae during 'Cuse's football game against UConn and during halftime of the Orange's 3-0 win over Bucknell at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
