SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior goaltender Ady Cohen made 23 saves in the first start of her career while the Orange's special teams killed all 10 of Mercyhurst's power play opportunities, but the Syracuse hockey team suffered a 1-0 setback Saturday afternoon inside Tennity Ice Pavilion.
Syracuse's record moves to 0-3-0 overall and 0-2-0 in College Hockey America play following the loss.
"The execution was there," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "I thought we were getting really good chances, and we generated some pretty good chances. The execution's there, but we didn't finish, unfortunately. It will come. We'll figure it out, but it was encouraging today."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
For the second straight game, Syracuse and Mercyhurst were deadlocked at zero after the first period of play. The Orange were short-handed twice in the period and shut down the Lakers' power play opportunities both times, including a barrage of shots while junior forward Savannah Rennie served a penalty for slashing.
Cohen came up with four saves while the Orange played down a skater, providing a huge boost to Syracuse's special teams.
Mercyhurst had four power play chances in the second period, but Syracuse's special teams again limited the damage. The Lakers found the back of the net while both teams were at full strength, however, when Sam Isbell scored the eventual game-winner with five minutes left in the period.
In the third, Syracuse again killed four penalties, helping keep its deficit at one. The Orange had offensive opportunities throughout the period, including a flurry of shots on net in the final minute, but could not score the equalizer.
OF NOTEÂ
Cohen started for the first time in her career. She made 23 saves, nearly matching her career total entering the game of 32.Â
Syracuse outshot Mercyhurst in both the second and third periods en route to generating more overall shots on net in game than the Lakers (25-24). Redshirt junior defenseman Lindsay Eastwood led the Orange's attack with her game-high five shots on net.
Eastwood also led the team in blocks with four. The Orange blocked 13 total shots.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange play CHA foe Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo., next weekend. The first game of the series is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night before Saturday's finale at 7 p.m.
