10/19/2018 10:30:00 PM | Ice Hockey
WENTZVILLE, Mo. - Down by two goals with seven minutes left to play in regulation, the Syracuse hockey team, led by sophomore forward Emma Polaski's two third-period goals, came all the way back before redshirt senior defenseman Lindsay Eastwood scored the game-winner three minutes into overtime, giving the Orange a 5-4 victory against Lindenwood Friday night.
Syracuse improves to 1-3-0 overall and 1-2-0 in College Hockey America (CHA) play with the win.
"A real character win tonight," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "After being down 3-1 with seven minutes to go, our team did a great job of continuing to battle and climb back into the game. Lindsay was at the right place at the right time to win the game in OT."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange were all over Lindenwood from the moment the puck dropped. Syracuse outshot its CHA foe, 13-3, in the first 20 minutes, and freshman forward Abby Moloughney would score her first career goal with two minutes remaining in the opening period, as the Orange entered the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse saw its lead disappear in the second period, however. Lindenwood scored twice despite generating only seven shots on goal compared to the Orange's 11.
Up 2-1 at the start of the third, the Lions maintained their one-goal cushion until midway through the period. Lindenwood's Jada Burke scored with 10 minute left, and Syracuse faced a two-goal deficit with time winding down.
The Orange's comeback began with sophomore forward Jessica DiGirolamo's second goal of the season. Assisted by Moloughney and junior forward Anonda Hoppner, DiGirolamo closed the gap to one with a little under seven minutes left to play.
Polaski, celebrating her birthday today, followed suit 37 seconds later, scoring her first of two goals to tie the game at three. Nearly a minute and a half later, Polaski struck again, converting a power play opportunity to give Syracuse a 4-3 lead.
Lindenwood scored the equalizer with four minutes left in regulation, forcing overtime. It was then Eastwood's turn to step up.
Three minutes into the extra period, the Orange co-captain scored her first goal of the season and clinched the 5-4 win.
OF NOTE
The win was Syracuse's first of the season, as well as its first CHA victory of the year. The Orange opened the year with three consecutive losses, suffering setbacks against No. 6 Boston College and Mercyhurst.
