WENTZVILLE, Mo. - The Syracuse hockey team's attack was firing on all cylinders Saturday night with five different Orange skaters scoring, including two goals from freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine, in a 6-3 win over Lindenwood.
The win was Syracuse's second against its College Hockey America foe in as many days, as the Orange improved to 2-3 overall and 2-2 in CHA play with the victory.
"Strong performance tonight from start to finish," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "It was great to see our offense get going and have many different players contributing."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
For the second night in a row, the Orange unloaded shot after shot against Lindenwood.Â
In the first period, sophomore forward Jessica DiGirolamo opened the scoring with her third goal of the season to give Syracuse an early 1-0 lead. Graduate student defenseman Dakota Derrer scored her first of the year two minutes later, and the Orange were ahead by two goals in the blink of an eye.
Lindenwood would quickly tie the game with two goals of its own, but sophomore forward Emma Polaski made sure Syracuse would enter the first intermission with a lead. She scored her third goal of the year with 12 seconds remaining in the period to put the Orange up, 3-2.
Bellefontaine was the story of the second period. She scored twice - her second and third career goals - to extend Syracuse's lead to 5-2.
After a Lindenwood goal cut the Orange's lead down to 5-3 in the third period, junior forward Anonda Hoppner made her presence felt. The newcomer scored a shorthanded goal, her first in a Syracuse sweater, with five minutes left in regulation, putting the finishing touches on the win.
OF NOTE
The win was Syracuse's second of the season and its second CHA victory of the year. The Orange now sit in second place in the conference standings.
The Orange outshot Lindenwood, 34-20. Polaski, Bellefontaine, DiGirolamo and redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery all had four shots on goal.Â
Senior defenseman Allie Munroe, Hoppner and Avery each had two assists. The Orange had nine assists overall.
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch started and finished with 17 saves. Derrer did her part defensively, as well, finishing with a team-high four blocks.
