SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University's championship four crew placed third overall at the Head of the Charles regatta on Sunday. The championship eight crew finished 13th overall on Sunday while the club eight earned a ninth-place finish on Saturday afternoon. It marked the second race of the season for the women's rowing team.
"The Club 8+, filled with four freshmen, led us off on Saturday and finished 9th overall," first-year head coach Luke McGee said. "The Championship 4+ had been going well in practice in the week leading up the Charles and really stepped up on race day, finishing second for collegiate crews and third overall behind a German Under-23 National Team and Stanford. The wind picked up throughout the day and by the time the Championship 8+ hit the water, the headwind was gusting well over 20 miles per hour. In the increasingly challenging conditions, we had a gutsy performance and fought hard down the entire length of the course. While we couldn't quite match the top crews, there was evidence of speed and an excitement to race hard for each other."
The club eight was the first on the water for Syracuse at the world-famous regatta in Cambridge, Mass., this weekend. They crossed the line in 17:31.03 turning in a time two seconds behind Temple. Yale had the fastest time of the day in the women's club 8+ finishing in 17:10.34.
In the women's championship four, Syracuse turned in the third fastest time clocking a 20:03.09. DRV Potsdam had the fastest time with 19:41.02 while Stanford's 4+ was the only other team ahead of the Orange.
In the final race of the weekend for 'Cuse, the champ 8+ finished in 17:47.99, which earned the Orange a 13th place finish ahead of Northeastern by nearly seven seconds. The Orange placed second out of the four Atlantic Coast Conference teams competing beating Duke and Louisville, who placed 19th and 24th, respectively in the championship eight.
"Our goal is to be one of the top teams this spring and the Charles was a good early-season speed check against the fastest crews in the country," McGee added. "We have work to do but I thought the team as a whole made improvements from our first race two weeks ago. We have one more race this fall so we will get back to work tomorrow morning."
The Orange wrap up their fall season on Nov. 3 at the Cornell Autumn Classic in Ithaca, N.Y.
