SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The regular season is here. Syracuse hockey begins its 2018-19 campaign against No. 6 Boston College Saturday afternoon in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
The puck drops at 2 p.m., and the contest will stream on ESPN3.
THE ORANGE ARE BACK
The Orange, who went 13-21-2 overall, 11-8-1 CHA last year, are led by co-captains senior Allie Munroe and redshirt junior Lindsay Eastwood, as well as alternate captain redshirt senior Brooke Avery, this season.
Munroe was named to the All-College Hockey America Second Team after posting 13 points (four goals and nine assists) as a junior. Eastwood, her fellow All-CHA Second Team member, was the Orange's most productive defenseman last season, leading the unit in points (23) and assists (19).
Avery, the lone forward of the trio, led the Orange in goals last season, netting 14 scores in 36 games played. A pinpoint sniper, the Conrad, N.H., native posted the second-highest shot percentage on the team at .182.
11 YEARS IN
The Orange are entering their 11th season of play, accumulating a 150-163-37 record during their time in CHA. Head coach Paul Flanagan has been at the helm of the Orange for all 11 years, leading Syracuse to six conference finals appearances, including three consecutive appearances from 2015-17.
JULIE'S BACK
A former Orange ice hockey team captain and four-year letterwinner is back home. Julie Knerr, a standout student-athlete with the program from 2011-15, returned to her alma mater as an assistant coach this preseason.
Knerr, who earned a bachelor's degree in health and physical education with a minor in coaching from Syracuse in 2015, was a crucial member of the Orange's front line throughout her career. She helped the team advance to the CHA Tournament Championship in 2012-13 and 2014-15.
She scored 38 points in 143 career games for the Orange and served as a captain in her senior season. She was also named to the CHA All-Academic Team every year while she was a student-athlete at Syracuse.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
No. 6 Boston College enters the contest with an 0-2-0 overall record, opening its season with two losses against No. 9 Minnesota Duluth last weekend.
The Eagles and Orange have squared off seven times prior to this Saturday's tilt, with Boston College holding a 5-1-1 all-time series lead. Syracuse lost last year's meeting at home, 4-3, after jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange are coming home. Syracuse is back at Tennity Ice Pavilion for its home opener next weekend, hosting CHA rival Mercyhurst.
The Orange play Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12 before wrapping up the homestand at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.
