SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Marie Sommer, a Russelheim Hessen, Germany, native, will attend Syracuse University and play field hockey for the Orange. She is the first announced member of the 2019 incoming class.
"I am extremely excited to welcome this 2019 class to our Syracuse family," head coach Ange Bradley said. "This class is one of the most talented classes we have recruited to Syracuse. We have a balance of domestic and international talent. I am pleased to welcome this class to our global Syracuse family."

Sommer was a captain on her youth team and helped lead the squad to the German U18 championship game. She attended Neus Gymnasium Russelshim High School.
She played for Russelsheimer RK, a club team in Germany led by head coach Norman Hahl.
"Marie is a blue chip recruit," Bradley said. "She is very smart, experienced and athletic. At six feet tall, she will offer great size and speed to our backfield. She possesses a strong knowledge of the game, understands how to organize the backfield and distribute the ball very well. She captained her team and helped lead them to the German U18 Championships.
"We will look to Marie to bring her experience, leadership, technical skills and tactical insights to our backfield."
Sommer is set to enroll in January and plans to study journalism in Syracuse's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.
She grew up with her mother and father, Tanja and Joachim, and little brother, Finn, in Russelsheim am Main in Hessen, Germany.
