
Orange Sweep Penn State behind Five-Goal Offensive Explosion

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Orange unloaded 34 shots on net, and five different Orange skaters scored goals, as the Syracuse hockey team took down Penn State, 5-2, to complete the series sweep Sunday afternoon.
Syracuse moves to 4-6 overall and 4-2 in CHA play with the win.
"It wasn't pretty today," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Penn State made us earn the two points, but it was a good weekend for us down here in Happy Valley."
HOW IT UNFOLDED
The Orange scored early and often Sunday inside Pegula Ice Arena.
Freshman forward Marielle McHale scored her first career goal four minutes into the first period to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. Junior forward Logan Hicks and sophomore defenseman Kristen Siermachesky provided the assists, their firsts of the year.
Syracuse extended its lead in the first period when sophomore forward Emma Polaski scored her team-leading fifth goal of the season. The Orange entered the first intermission up 2-0.
The script flipped in the second period, however, as Penn State came out of the break with a newfound aggression. The Nittany Lions' Izzy Heminger cut into Syracuse's lead with a goal at 2:19, and her teammate Shea Nelson scored the equalizer 30 seconds later, evening the game at 2-2.
Junior forward Anonda Hoppner broke the deadlock with her second goal in as many days, putting the game-winning shot past Penn State goaltender Jenna Brenneman with under two minutes left to play in the period. Freshman forward Lauren Bellefontaine and senior defenseman Allie Munroe earned assists on Hoppner's third tally of the season, as Syracuse entered the second intermission ahead 3-2.
Sophomore forward Victoria Klimek scored her first goal of the year in the fourth period, and redshirt senior forward Brooke Avery added an empty-net goal late in the period to seal the 5-2 win.
OF NOTE
Syracuse outshot Penn State, 34-20. Hoppner led the team with seven shots on net while redshirt junior Lindsay Eastwood had six.
Munroe finished with a team-high two assists and two points, also carding an assist on Klimek's goal. Avery had two points, recording an assist on Klimek's tally in addition to the goal of her own.
Senior goaltender Maddi Welch made her sixth start of the season and finished with 18 saves for the second straight game.
WHAT LIES AHEAD
The Orange are home for a two-game series against Princeton inside Tennity Ice Pavilion Nov. 10-11. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m. both days.
