SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A pair of season-highs from Oshae Brissett Tuesday evening against Northeastern (4-5) helped Syracuse (6-2) secure its fourth-straight victory, 72-47. Brissett led all players with 21 points and 14 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Joining Brissett in double-digits were Elijah Hughes and Buddy Boeheim. Hughes picked up 17 points on a 6-of-11 performance, including three 3-pointers. Boeheim tallied a career-high 11 points, including three three-pointers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite Syracuse opening the game 10-2, Northeastern fired off three-straight three-pointers, including a four-point play, to take its first and only lead of the night, 12-10.
Brissett and Hughes quickly put the Orange back on top with back-to-back baskets, taking the lead for good, 15-12. Northeastern continued to nip at Syracuse's heels picking up a pair of free throws but two three-pointers from Hughes and Brissett lifted the Orange to a seven-point, 21-14, lead.
The scoring pace slowed down as both teams went scoreless for over five minutes, missing their next 10 combined shots. Northeastern closed it to a one possession game three more times, until Syracuse was able to break away.
Jalen Carey and Boeheim knocked down back-to-back baskets for a 30-23 lead, jump starting the Orange's 9-0- run that closed the first half.
BOARDING UP
The Orange, paced by Brissett, outrebounded the Huskies, 43-29. Syracuse owned a 19-8 advantage in second-chance points. Brissett evenly split his 14 rebounds (7 offensive, 7 defensive) and Syracuse finished with 15 offensive rebounds.
NORTHEASTERN GOES COLD
Syracuse's defense kicked in after the intermission and helped the Orange build on its halftime lead. The Huskies were just 9-of-28 from the floor (.321), including 2-of-16 (.125) on 3-point attempts, in the second half.
COACH BOEHEIM SAID
"I thought we really started well against their zone - very good movement on our part. We got the ball where we needed to and landed a couple of shots, but they also hit a couple of long ones. They are a pretty good shooting team. I felt that the last 10 minutes of the first half we didn't give them many shots and were playing good defense."
OF NOTE
Syracuse continues its seven-game homestand on Saturday, Dec. 8 with a game against former BIG EAST rival, Georgetown. Tipoff is scheduled to 3:30 p.m. at the Carrier Dome.
