Grossi Becomes All-Time Points Leader After Orange's 6-0 Win

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team completed the regular season sweep of RIT after downing the Tigers, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at the Gene Polisseni Center. Senior Stephanie Grossi tallied an assist in the game to move into first in program history for career points with 113.
"It was a good win today and it was nice to see some kids who typically don't get as much ice time play some good shifts," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "It was great to see Edith [D'Astous-Moreau] play well and get her first career shutout. Steph became the all-time leading scorer so that is awesome. RIT generated a lot of good chances but Edith stepped up and did a good job."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Freshman Victoria Klimek kicked things off for the Orange, sniping the puck past the RIT netminder for her second goal in as many games. The game stayed 1-0 heading into the first intermission as both teams put 16 shots on goal in the first frame.
The Orange came out firing in the second period as senior Alysha Burriss placed a wrister top shelf to give Syracuse the two-goal lead. It was goals on goals for the Orange as Savannah Rennie, Taylor Curtis and Emma Polaski scored successive goals in a three-minute span to make it 5-0, 'Cuse.
With just over three minutes to go in the second, Rennie received a feed Polaski and buried the puck in the back of the net for her second score of the game. Freshman goalie Edith D'Astous-Moreau made a career-best 38 saves in goal for the Orange en route to her first career shutout.
OF NOTE
With her assist against RIT, Grossi surpassed former teammate and current RIT assistant head coach Melissa Piacentini for sole possession of most career points in Syracuse program history. The senior has tallied 113 career points with 44 goals and 69 assists in her four-year career with the Orange. She is also the leader in career assists and ranks second for career goals.
It was another game of firsts as Curtis snagged her first collegiate goal, while D'Astous-Moreau tallied her first collegiate shutout. This was also the first two-point game for Polaski as she tallied a goal and an assist against RIT.
The Orange went 4-0 against the Tigers this season, marking the first time that Syracuse has executed the season sweep against RIT. 'Cuse outscored the Tigers 22-3 during the 2017-18 regular season with 13 different Orange notching goals and 18 contributing on offense (goals or assists).
UP NEXT
The Orange head to St. Charles, Missouri for the final road series of the season, taking on Lindenwood on Feb. 16 and 17. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
