Teran, Romero Power 'Cuse Past Cal Poly

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – Freshman Gabby Teran batted 3-for-3 with a homerun, double, and two RBIs and sophomore Alexa Romero pitched six hitless innings with nine strikeout to lead Syracuse (5-3) to a 4-2 win over Cal Poly (4-6) Monday morning at the Mary Nutter Classic.
Junior Bryce Holmgren finished 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run and sophomore Toni Martin went 1-for-3 with a double and a run.
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti started in the circle for the Orange. In an inning of work, she allowed two runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI single and a two-out RBI double. In the second inning, the Mustangs had runners on second and third with no outs. Romero came on in relief for the Orange and put away the next three batters to get Syracuse out of the jam.
Teran hit a solo homer to left field to get the Orange on the board in the second inning and Martin scored on a Cal Poly error to tie the game at two.
In the bottom of the third, Holmgren was hit by a pitch and freshman Neli Casares-Maher singled to give the Orange runners on first and second. Teran hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to bring home Holmgren and give 'Cuse a 3-2 lead.
Junior Alicia Hansen walked with two outs in the sixth to give Syracuse a runner on first. In the next at-bat, Holmgren hit an RBI double to bring in an insurance run.
Of Note
Romero improves to 4-0 on the year. In 28.2 innings of work this season, she has 38 strikeouts and a 1.47 ERA.
The solo shot by Teran was the first Syracuse homerun of the season. Teran only had three at bats, but was a triple shy of the cycle.

Syracuse plays five games in three days at the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational from Friday, Feb. 23 through Sunday, Feb. 25.
