SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse tennis team is back in action at Drumlins, hosting former Big East Rival Connecticut for an afternoon match-up on Friday, Feb. 9. First serve is set for 4 p.m. with the doubles rounds kicking off the match, followed by singles action.
Last Time Out
The Orange are coming off their first loss of the season, a 4-3 defeat in the conference opener at Virginia. Syracuse took the doubles point after a pair of strong 6-4 victories by the No. 2 duo (Dina Hegab and Maria Tritou) and the No. 3 pair (Sofya Golubovskaya and Anna Shkudun).
Hegab and Gabriela Knutson each posted wins for the Orange in the singles rounds, both moving to 4-0 on the season. However, it was all Cavaliers for the final three matches as Virginia tallied three consecutive wins to snag the 4-3 victory.
The final point came down to the No. 2 singles match between Miranda and Virginia's Cassie Mercer. With the match tied at one set apiece, the pair battled it out in set three with Mercer coming out ahead, 7-6, after a 7-4 tiebreak, to clinch the match for Virginia.
Scouting the Huskies
Connecticut brings a similar 3-1 record into Drumlins. The Orange have won nine straight matches against the Huskies, most recently defeating Connecticut 7-0 back in 2011, the first sweep for Syracuse when facing the Huskies. Three Connecticut players hold 4-0 records in singles play led by the No. 1 singles player Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva.
Orange in the Spotlight
The doubles duo of Knutson and Ramirez checked in at 13th in the Oracle/ITA National Doubles Rankings. The pair jumped 46 spots since the preseason rankings in November to their current place on the list. Knutson retained her 17th position in the Singles Rankings, as well.
Up Next
The Orange take a break from action before returning to Drumlins for a pair of home contests against Boston College and Yale on Feb. 16 and 18, respectively. Admission to all home matches at Drumlins is free and pizza will be available to all fans.
