Knight and Crittenden's Podium Performances Highlight Huge Weekend
2/3/2018 9:28:00 PM | Track and Field
At the historic Millrose Games, in front of a nationally televised audience, two members of the Orange track and field program – Senior Justyn Knight and 2017 alum Freddie Crittenden III – shined against some of the best runners in the professional ranks.
The Orange duo highlighted a big weekend for the Syracuse track and field programs, with Martin Hehir taking fifth in the USATF Cross Country Championships earlier in the afternoon and the current squad continuing a successful weekend in Boston. All this comes on the heels of Jarret Eaton posting a world-leading time in the 60-meter hurdles on Thursday.
Knight, the only collegian in a 12-man 3000-meter field, finished second behind Olympian Shadrack Kipchirchir. Knight crossed the line in 7:45.86, just 0.37 seconds behind Kipchirchir. Knight hung with the lead pack for the race's duration before making his move from fifth to second on the penultimate lap. Then, on the bell lap, Kipchirchir turned on the jets and Knight answered, as the duo distanced themselves from the field. However, Knight couldn't overtake Kipchirchir on the final lap and finished in second.
Crittenden III got off to the fastest start in the field, edging his way to first over the early hurdles. Devon Allen – 2016 Olympic 110-meter hurdles fifth place finisher – and former gold medalist Aries Meritt, who holds the current 110-meter hurdles world record, eventually pushed past Crittenden III near the end, giving him a third-place finish. Allen (7.50 seconds), Merritt (7.53 seconds) were close within range of Crittenden III, who finished in 7.66 seconds.
At the BU Bruce Lehane Invite, Justice Richardson came away with the win in the 60-meter dash. She crossed the line in 7.62 seconds, a strong performance on the heels of a 7.55 personal-best race from a day prior.
The women continued their strong day in the 200, with Eunice Boateng (23.92 seconds) and Imani Clark (23.94 seconds), taking third and fourth respectively.
Chevis Armstead took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles, with a mark of 8.09 seconds.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Jamil Adams, Pascal Bastien, Armstead and Matt Moore finished sixth in 3:16.94. The women's group fared one-place better, with the group of Danielle Delgado, Alexis Harper, Tia Thevenin and Kadejhia Sellers finishing fifth in 3:40.78
Randall Johnson finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 1.95 meters. Aviana Goode leapt to a mark of 1.65 meters for a third-place finish.
The Orange head back to Boston next weekend for the BU Valentine Invitational.
