SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse ice hockey team squares-off with longtime conference foe RIT for the final home-and-home series with the Tigers of the season. The Orange are looking to halt a three-game skid with a pair of crucial conference victories over RIT.
Â
Last Time Out
The Orange came up short in their final non-conference game of the season when the fell 5-0 to No. 6 Cornell, Tuesday night in Ithaca, N.Y. The Big Red took an early 3-0 lead but the Orange would not go quietly, outshooting Cornell 14-11 in the second period. A pair of second-period goals solidified the win for the Big Red.
Â
Freshman Edith D'Astous-Moreau made her third career start in goal for the Orange, tallying a career-high 32 saves despite allowing five goals in the outing.
Â
Scouting the Tigers
RIT sits at 4-21-3 overall with a 1-13-0 record in CHA play this season. The Tigers are led in goals by Kendall Cornine, while Brittney Gout and Mallory Rushton rank tied for first in assists with eight apiece. Opponents are outscoring RIT 111-39 this season and the Tigers have been the victim of a shutout four times this season.
Â
The last win for the Tigers came on Nov. 4 when RIT defeated Boston University 2-1 in overtime. The only CHA win for RIT so far this year came against Lindenwood, a 4-3 victory, on Oct. 27.
Â
Series History
The Orange and the Tigers have met a total of 24 times in program history with Syracuse holding the 15-7-2 series advantage. Thirteen of the 24 meetings have ended in a tie or have been one-goal games, while seven of the contests have gone into overtime.
Â
The two teams last met in November for the first two-game series of the season. The Oragne emerged with the weekend sweep, outscoring the Tigers 9-2. Redshirt junior Brooke Avery pinned three goals on RIT that weekend, while redshirt sophomore Lindsay Eastwood tallied four assists across the two games.
Â
Crunch Time
With just six games left in the regular season and a battler emerging for the top two spots in the conference, it is crunch time for the Orange, who look to get a first round bye in the CHA Tournament. In the nine seasons in program history, the Orange have posted a winning record in the final six games of the season in five of the nine years.
Â
In both the 2008-09 season and the 2015-16 season, Syracuse wrapped up the final six games with a perfect 6-0 record to carry momentum into the conference tournament. The Orange have not recorded a losing record in the final six games of the season since the 2011-12 campaign when the team went 1-5 in the last six regular season games.
Â
UP NEXT
The Orange head to St. Charles, Missouri for the final road series of the season, taking on Lindenwood on Feb. 16 and 17. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
