Orange Record 7-1 Rout Over RIT
2/10/2018 12:05:00 AM | Ice Hockey
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It was a goal-fest for the Orange Friday night as Syracuse (10-17-2, 9-5-1) defeated RIT (4-22-3, 1-14-0), 7-1, at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Seven different Syracuse players notched a goal in the contest, while 10 different Orange tallied a point in the rout of the Tigers.
"When you are a team that has been shutout seven times this year, it's pretty important to get on the board," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "I think the score is a little deceiving because they had some grade-A chances in the second and third period. Abbey [Miller] didn't have to make a ton of saves but she had to make some good ones."
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
The Orange jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of goals by Savannah Rennie and Allie Munroe just five minutes into the game. Senior Megan Quinn blasted a slap shot through traffic just four minutes later to make it 3-0 Orange heading into the first intermission. The Syracuse defense limited the Tigers to just three shots in the first period, while the Orange peppered 15 shots on goal.
After recording two assists in the first period, senior Alysha Burriss finally found the back of the net off a backhander that beat a sprawling RIT netminder. Following the Orange's fourth goal, it was back to work for the Syracuse defense as they were forced to kill off two 5-on-3 RIT opportunities. A cross-ice pass by Quinn to Victoria Klimek set the freshman up for the Orange's first short-handed goal of the season, giving Syracuse the 5-0 lead.
The Orange were relentless as Allie Olnowich and Ronnie Callahan each notched goals in the third period, the first scores of their respective collegiate careers. Olnowich sniped a shot from the blue line, while Callahan put the puck five-hole to extend the Orange lead to seven goals. RIT answered late in the third with a power play score but the damage was done.
OF NOTE
It was a game of firsts for the Orange as Olnowich and Callahan each tallied their first career goals. Freshman Taylor Curtis also tallied her first career assist on the Callahan score.
Klimek's short-handed goal was the first by an Orange since Stephanie Grossi scored on the penalty kill against Colgate on Oct. 21, 2016.
Four Orange (Munroe, Rennie, Burriss and Quinn) tallied both a goal and an assist in the outing.
Seven goals is the most by an Orange team since the 2015 when Syracuse pinned seven goals on RIT in the first meeting between the two teams that season. The Orange have scored seven or more goals just six times in program history, with the most goals coming in the inaugural season as Syracuse defeated Sacred Heart 10-0.
