Softball Splits on Opening Day

BATON ROUGE, La. – Sophomore Alexa Romero pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts to lead Syracuse (1-1) to a 4-0 win over UMass Friday afternoon in the Tiger Classic. Senior AnnaMarie Gatti pitched five innings and struck out five in a 1-0 loss to UT Arlington in the morning contest.
Game 1: UT Arlington 1, Syracuse 0
A two-out RBI double in the second inning pulled UT Arlington ahead. Syracuse produced nine hits but was unable to get on the scoreboard.
Junior Bryce Holmgren and freshman Lailoni Mayfield finished 2-for-3. Sammy Fernandez batted 2-for-4 and sophomore Gianna Carideo added a pinch-hit single.
Gatti started in the circle for the Orange. In five innings, she allowed four hits, one run, walked five and struck out five. Freshman Miranda Hearn fanned one and walked one in an inning of relief.
Mayfield, Fernandez and Holmgren singled to load the bases in the third inning with two outs. The Mavericks forced a fly-out in the next at-bat to get out of the jam.
The Orange rallied once again in the seventh. With one out, Carideo and Mayfield produced back-to-back singles. UT Arlington retired the last two batters to hold on for the victory.
Game 2: Syracuse 4, UMass 0
Syracuse got on the board early with one run in each of the first two innings. Stout pitching, combined with two insurance runs in the sixth inning helped the Orange claim the win.
Fernandez went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs. Junior Alicia Hansen finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks and Holmgren was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
In seven innings of work, Romero allowed five hits and struck out 11.
Fernandez singled, Hansen walked and Holmgren was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs in the first inning. Freshman Neli Casares-Maher produced the first run of the season with an RBI groundout. Hansen singled in the second inning to bring in another run and give Syracuse a 2-0 lead.
With runners on first and second in the sixth inning, Fernandez brought one home with an RBI double. Later in the inning Holmgren plated another run with a single.
Romero retired six-straight batters to seal the triumph.
Of Note
- The Orange had their seven-game opening day win streak snapped with the setback to UT Arlington. Syracuse is now 11-8 all-time in season openers.
- All six newcomers on the roster saw action in at least one of the two contests. Hearn saw time both in the batter's box and in the circle.
- 'Cuse left eight runners on base in the loss to the Mavericks. The Orange outhit UT Arlington 9-4 but were unable to muster a run.
What's Next
Syracuse has two games scheduled on Saturday, Feb. 10 in the Tiger Classic. The Orange are set to face Southern Miss at 2:30 p.m. (CT) and No. 8 LSU at 7:30 p.m. (CT).
