Orange Top Golden Eagles, 8-3

BATON ROUGE, La. – Junior Bryce Holmgren finished 1-of-3 with a double, two RBI, and two runs and junior Alicia Hansen went 2-of-3 with a triple, RBI and two runs to lead Syracuse (2-1) past Southern Miss (0-4), 8-3, Sunday morning at Tiger Park.
Senior Sammy Fernandez was 2-of-4 with a double and a run, freshman Gabby Teran finished 2-of-3 with two runs and sophomore Toni Martin drove in two runs with a double in her lone at bat.
Sophomore Alexa Romero got the start and improved to 2-0 on the season. In 5.1 innings, Romero allowed one run on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Freshman Miranda Hearn pitched 1.2 innings down the stretch to earn her first career save. She allowed one hit, walked one and fanned one.
Romero struck out three batters in the first inning and Hansen tripled and scored on a wild pitch to give Syracuse an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Teran reached base with a leadoff single and Fernandez doubled to give the Orange runners on second and third. Holmgren brought in two runs for the Orange with a double to center. Freshmen Lailoni Mayfield and Neli Casares-Maher each reached to load the bases and freshman Michala Maciolek hit a sac fly to put Syracuse up 4-0.
Southern Miss tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth and the Orange brought on Hearn to pitch. With runners on first and second, Hearn forced a groundout and a fly-out to get Syracuse out of the jam.
In the bottom half of the inning, junior Hannah Dossett and Teran hit back-to-back singles and Dossett scored on a pair of throwing errors by the Golden Eagles. Hansen singled in Teran to give the Orange a 6-3 advantage. Holmgren was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and Martin doubled to right center to clear the bases.
Of Note
Romero opened up the season with 12.1 scoreless innings pitched. She allowed 10 hits and struck out 19 during the stretch.
Hansen increased her hitting streak to seven games. Her triple in the first inning was the first of her career.
Holmgren and Hansen have reached base in 25 straight games, dating back to Apr. 2, 2017.
