SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Maryland standout and NFHCA All-American Katie Gerzabek is the newest member of Syracuse University's field hockey staff according to an announcement made by head coach Ange Bradley on Sunday. Gerzabek comes to 'Cuse after spending the last three seasons as an assistant coach on Marybeth Freeman's staff at Temple.
"I am extremely honored and excited for the opportunity to join the Syracuse Field Hockey program and to work with both Ange Bradley and Allan Law to continue my growth in the coaching profession," Gerzabek said. "I am looking forward to using my experiences as a student-athlete in the ACC to help mentor and teach the Syracuse student-athletes to be the best that they can be. I plan to bring my love for the game and knowledge of the game as both a player and a coach to help continue the tradition that Syracuse Field Hockey has set over the past years. Thank you to both Ange Bradley and everyone at Syracuse for the opportunity. I can't wait to get started!"
Gerzabek began coaching during her undergraduate years at Maryland when she was a club coach with the Washington Wolves in Rockville, Md. While with the wolves, she worked closely with former Syracuse assistant coach Steve Simpson.
"Katie's experience coaching in the futures and club programs will bring patience and understanding to developing the many skills required for the game at the next level," Bradley said. "This will be helpful and will assist growing our 18 underclassmen to the collegiate game. She is an outstanding recruiter with tremendous recruiting networks in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland areas."
She was a manager for the USA U19 National Team in 2016, where Bradley was head coach, and provided video analysis of front five players while helping prepare the team for international competition in Germany.
Upon graduating from Maryland, she began a three-year stint at Temple as an assistant coach. While with the Owls, she was responsible for organizing and implementing practice and game plans with the coaching staff, analyzing video of practices, recruiting and monitoring student-athletes academic progress.
She holds USA Field Hockey Level 1 and Level 2 certifications and is the site director and head coach of the USA Field Hockey Futures program in Pennsylvania.
"As a recent student-athlete herself, Katie can relate extremely well to the demands of being a student-athlete," Bradley added. "Having played for her country on both the U21 and US Indoor National Team she understands elite performance."

She was a member of the U17, U19, and U21 Junior National Team from 2009-13 where she competed in the Junior Pan American Games and Junior World Cup. Gerzabek is currently a member of the US Indoor National Team and helped USA to the 2017 Pan American Indoor Cup Championship where it qualified for the Indoor World Cup.
Gerzabek was a four-year starter for the Terrapins and was a freshman on Maryland's 2011 National Championship squad. She scored the first of three Terp goals in UMD's comeback effort over North Carolina in the championship match. Maryland won the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and as captain, she led the Terps to their first Big Ten Regular Season Championship in 2014.
As a senior, she was named NFHCA Third Team All-American in 2014 and earned All-Big Ten Second Team accolades. Additionally, she was named to the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic First Team as both a freshman (2011) and senior (2014).
Gerzabek earned a Bachelor's degree from Maryland in 2015 and a Masters in Educational Leadership from Temple in 2017.
