'Cuse Splits at Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore pitcher Alexa Romero struck out a career-high 14 batters to lead Syracuse (16-12) to a 4-1 win over Army West Point (11-17) in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
Senior AnnaMarie Gatti fanned a season-best six batters to lead the Orange in a 5-1 setback in game two.
Game 1: Syracuse 4, Army West Point 1
Romero pitched a complete game, allowing one run on three hits with a walk, to improve to 11-7 this season.
Freshman Michala Maciolek had a 2-RBI single and senior Rachel Burkhardt and freshman Lailoni Mayfield each added an RBI hit.
Freshman Gabby Teran walked to leadoff the second inning and sophomore Toni Martin moved her to third with a single. Martin stole second and Mayfield singled home the first run. Maciolek drove home two more with a single to left center and later in the inning Burkhardt gave the Orange a 4-0 lead with an RBI single to center.
A solo homerun in the sixth gave the Black Knights their lone run.
Romero recorded all three outs in the seventh off strikeouts to set her personal-best.
Game 2: Army West Point 5, Syracuse 1
Courtney Springman went the distance for Army, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
Gatti pitched all six innings and only allowed one earned run. She surrendered six hits and walked two. Senior Sammy Fernandez went 2-for-4 and Martin added an RBI single.
Martin singled home the lone Syracuse run in the top of the first. The Black Knights leveled the game up in the second with an RBI double to left field.
Two Orange throwing errors in the third inning resulted in four Army runs coming home.
'Cuse only had two base runners for the remainder of the game.
Of Note
Romero's previous career-best came when she fanned 13 batters this season at Elon on Mar. 13.
Head coach Mike Bosch is one win away from earning his 600th career victory.
With three hits on the day, Fernandez enters the weekend series against Boston College eight hits shy of becoming Syracuse's all-time base hits leader.

The Orange open up at home with a three-game series against Boston College. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 31 at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday at noon. All games will be played at Skytop Softball Stadium.
