13th-ranked Men’s Rowing Brings Home Stagg Trophy
4/14/2018 12:53:00 PM | Men's Rowing
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Stagg Trophy is in the possession of the Syracuse men's rowing team for the first time since 2011 following Saturday's annual race against No. 11 Cornell and No. 15 Navy. The 13th-ranked Orange earned the treasured prize, which is awarded to the team that accumulates the most points between the three squads, following wins by the second and third varsity eight crews.
"I thought it was good racing across the board" said Head Coach Dave Reischman. "Syracuse, Cornell and Navy is always a dog fight every year. We saw that 1000-meters into the first race of the day that it was going to be a lot of tough racing coming down the stretch. I liked how our guys performed. As typical with this time of year I think we have identified some things that we can improve to get better as we all get ready for the sprints and the IRA."
The Big Red won the Goes Trophy after a come-from-behind win in the varsity eight race clocking a time of 5:58.1 on the 2000m course on Lake Onondaga. The Orange varsity eight, led by senior coxswain Dominic Santora, finished a second behind Cornell (5:59.1) to place second. Navy who jumped out to an early lead in the varsity eight placed third with a time of 6:04.3.
For the second week in a row the Orange's second and third varsity eight boats won their races which included a strong finish by the third varsity eight to secure the Stagg Trophy for 'Cuse.
Syracuse brings home The Stagg Trophy for the seventh time in program history and first since 2011.
Cornell reclaimed The Goes Trophy from Navy and has now brought the hardware back to Ithaca for the fifth time in the last six years. Navy leads all-time Goes Trophy wins with 26 while Cornell now rides the Midshipmen's heels with 25 and Syracuse has 11 since the cup was first awarded in 1955.
This marks the first time since 2007 that the two trophies have been split. Last time it happened was in 2007 when Syracuse won The Goes Trophy and Cornell won The Stagg Trophy. In 2010, only The Goes Trophy was awarded.
Coach Reishman's Thoughts
On the first varsity eight…
We've had a pattern the last couple of years being a little slow off of the line and moving on crews in the third 500m. But, particularly in this race ended up a little bit short and we wanted to change that pattern. I thought we executed really well in the first 500m. Navy was out front and we were up on Cornell and I really liked how we executed in the first 1000m and that's something that we need to keep doing as the season progresses.
On the second varsity eight…
What I like about both our 2V and 3V is that there's a lot of young kids in those boats. We've made it a focus all season long to be stronger in those races and the guys have responded to it. I think how they raced today was great. Great execution in the first part of the race to take control of it and Cornell made a nice push but this time we were able to execute a little bit better and hang on for the win. The second varsity gives our first varsity fits in practice every day and that's the way it should be.
On the third varsity eight…
Our 3V had a very similar race to last week – they were down early in the race. They're pretty young crew but they don't panic. They keep their nose in the race and just keep doing their thing and were able to get out at Navy. I don't think those guys realized during the race that the points' trophy was going to come down to the third varsity race. I don't know if it would have changed their execution any. We were keenly aware of it in the coaching launch and it was pretty exciting to see those guys come through in the second part of the race and do what they did. A great win for them and again our 2V and 3V were awesome today.

Clifford "Tip" Goes, Syracuse Class of 1914, created the Goes Trophy in 1955 to honor coaches James Ten Eyck of Syracuse, Charles Courtney of Cornell and Richard Glendon of Navy. The trophy is presented to the winner of the annual race between the schools.
About the Stagg Trophy
Presented to the team compiling the most overall points in the heavyweight races between Navy, Cornell and Syracuse, the Stagg Trophy is named after Norman G. Stagg, the late Tompkins County judge and former Cornell oarsman.
