CLEMSON, S.C. – Syracuse's women's rowing team faced some of the top completion in the country this weekend at the Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C., and head coach Justin Moore walked away pleased with the experience his team gained. The highlight of the final day was perhaps when the No. 18 Orange second varsity eight crew won the B Final in dominant fashion.
"This is an incredible experience for our student-athletes," Moore said. "This is a quality field and the caliber of racing in the finals is really close to championship level. All of the finals today were tightly contested and that's when your athletes learn the most. When they're in really close six-boat races and can cut their teeth on the race."
'Cuse tallied 85 total points to finish eighth out of the 21-team field. No. 4 Ohio State earned the most points to finish on top with 130 points while No. 9 Virginia was second with 124 points. The Orange were third amongst Atlantic Coast Conference teams in total points, finishing one point behind Duke (RV) who had 85.
Syracuse's first varsity eight placed second in the B final clocking a time of 6:28.25. In the second varsity eight B final the Orange cruised to a first-place finish turning in the fastest Syracuse time in any of 'Cuse's varsity eight crews (6:06.83).
"Our second varsity eight had a challenging week of preparation and did a fantastic job progressing throughout the regatta," said Moore. "They took control of the B Final and did not look back."
Syracuse's third varsity eight finished sixth in the A Final with a time of 6:41.35. In the first varsity four B Final the Orange clocked a 7:16.29 en route to a fourth place finish. 'Cuse raced in the 2V4+ A Final finishing in fifth with a time of 7:25.30.
"We love coming down here," added Moore. "And our student-athletes love coming down here because it allows us to really have three incredible high-quality races that help us become faster as we move into the championship part of our racing season."
The Orange return home and have two weeks to prepare for their next outing against Princeton and Wisconsin on April 28 in Princeton, N.J.
