Fernandez Breaks Another Record in Win over Binghamton

Romero Earns Three Different Player of the Week Accolades
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior Sammy Fernandez became the program's all-time leader in multi-hit games (65) and Syracuse defeated Binghamton, 8-1, Tuesday afternoon at Skytop Softball Stadium to win its seventh game in a row.
The Orange host Colgate tomorrow afternoon in a doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Game Summary
A four-run first inning gave 'Cuse a commanding lead. Cain got things going with a two-RBI double to right field. Freshman Gabby Teran came home on a Binghamton fielding error and an RBI single from freshman Michala Maciolek gave Syracuse a 4-0 lead.
The Bearcats pulled within three after an RBI single from Jessica Rutherford in the fourth but Teran answered right back with an RBI single of her own in the bottom half to stretch the Orange lead back to four.
'Cuse loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth and Holmgren drove in all three runners to cap off the scoring.
Freshman Miranda Hearn pitched the final two innings and kept the Bearcats off the board while allowing two hits.
Romero Garners Weekly Honors
Romero has been recognized by two different media outlets and the Atlantic Coast Conference office for her stellar performance last week. She was named the Fastpitch News NCAA Div. I Co-Player of the Week, the ACC Pitcher of the Week and the College Sports Madness ACC Player of the Week.
Romero was lights out last week for Syracuse. She won all three of her starts and allowed two combined runs on five hits with seven walks and 41 strikeouts in 20.0 innings of action.
Romero started off the week with 14 strikeouts, which tied her career-high at the time, in a 7-1 victory over Niagara. Then, the ace from Aurora, Colo. set a new personal-best with 16 strikeouts in a 3-1 win over NC State in game one of a three-game series between the schools. Romero capped off the week by giving up just one hit in six shutout innings with 11 strikeouts in a 7-0 win over the Wolfpack.
Romero finished the week with a 0.70 ERA, a .063 opponent batting average and 14.4 strikeouts per seven innings.
Of Note
In addition to becoming the all-time leader in multi-hit games, Fernandez also moved into first place for the Orange in career at-bats (669).
Maciolek has produced and RBI at-bat in four consecutive games. She's got 13 this season, which is tied for second amongst the first year members on team.
Romero has recorded double-digit strikeouts for the fourth consecutive game. Entering the matchup, her 11.0 strikeouts per seven innings ranked second nationally.
