WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - For the second time in three seasons, the Syracuse tennis team will send both a singles player and a doubles pair to the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship. Junior Gabriela Knutson will compete in the Singles Championship as the fifth-seeded competitior in the tournament, while the duo of Knutson and Miranda Ramirez will look to make a run in the Doubles Championship.
Â
Prior to 2016, the Orange had not had both a singles player and a doubles pair in the Championship since 1996, when sisters Nicole and Jana Strnadova represented Syracuse on the national stage.
Â
This will be the second trip to spring Nationals for Knutson as she was part of the doubles tandem that competed in 2016. The junior will kick off her Tournament run in singles action, squaring off with Jaeda Daniel from Auburn at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23. Knutson enters the NCAA Singles Championship as the fifth-ranked player in the nation, boasting five, top-25 victories and a 19-3 overall record.
Â
As a duo, Knutson and Ramirez are no stranger to competing at a national level as the pair streaked all the way to the semifinals of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in the fall. The Orange doubles tandem will face the duo of Terri Fleming and Jada Hart (5-8) from UCLA on Thursday, May 24. The time of the match has yet to be determined.
Â
Knutson and Ramirez hold a 15-5 record on the year, including a 6-2 victory over the No. 1 doubles team in the nation of Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones from Georgia Tech. The pair rides an 8-2 mark over the last 10 games into the NCAA Doubles Championship.
