SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Finishing the 2018 tennis season ranked the eighth doubles pair in the nation according to the Oracle/ITA Rankings, junior Gabriela Knutson and Miranda Ramirez earned All-America honors, becoming the first Orange athletes to do so since Erica O'Neill in 1995. Coming off a breakout season, Knutson also earned Singles All-America accolades after finishing the year 21-5 in singles action and making it to the round of 16 in the NCAA Individual Championship.
Knutson is quickly on her way to becoming one of the most decorated athletes in Syracuse tennis program history, having accumulated 139 career wins, just 11 shy of joining the 150 club. Only four other 'Cuse women can claim 150 club status. The junior has also tallied two seasons with 50 wins or more, combining dual and tour play.
Knutson entered the NCAA Tournament as the fifth-ranked player in the nation having only lost three times during the regular season, all three coming against top-10 opponents. The Czech Republic native cruised through the first two rounds of the Tournament before falling in a three-set battle in the round of 16 to Mayar Sherif Ahmed of Pepperdine.
With a 12-2 singles record in Atlantic Coast Conference play, Knutson earned All-ACC First Team honors, becoming the first every Orange to garner First Team accolades in program history. During the 2018 campaign, Knutson notched five victories over top-50 opponents and was the match-clinching point in Syracuse's historic victory over No. 3 Georgia Tech on April 1.
The junior will enter her senior season eighth on Syracuse's all-time wins list, just 13 shy over moving into the top five.
As a doubles team, Knutson and Ramirez, posted a 16-4 mark this season, including seven straight victories in conference play during the regular season. In a historic team victory over No. 3 Georgia Tech, Knutson and Ramirez knocked off the No. 1 pair of Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones.
The pair received a bid to the NCAA Individual Doubles Championship, knocking off the (5-8) duo of Terri Fleming and Jada Hart from UCLA. A 6-2, 3-6, 10-7 victory over the UCLA pair advanced Knutson and Ramirez to the round of 16, but they could not overcome the red hot doubles tandem from Oklahoma State, a duo that would play for the National Championship a few days later.
With their eighth place ranking in the final Oracle/ITA Doubles Rankings, Knutson and Ramirez became the first Doubles All-Americans in Syracuse program history.
