SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Derryk Williams, a young coach with strong ties to central New York, has been hired as an assistant coach for the Syracuse volleyball program, head coach Leonid Yelin announced Wednesday, July 11.
As an assistant coach at Hamilton College during the 2017 season, Williams helped the program post its most conference wins (seven) in history on the way to earning the No. 4 seed in the NESCAC conference tournament, the best in program history. While working primarily with the team's middle blockers, Williams coached the fourth-best blocker in Division III, Margaret O'Brien, who recorded 1.24 blocks per set.
Williams spent the 2017 season as a volunteer assistant coach at Colgate following an assistant coach position in 2016. In his two seasons, the Raiders finished 36-22 overall with a 2016 runner-up finish in the Patriot League. The 2017 Raiders posted an 18-11 record before concluding their season in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
He began his coaching career at Ithaca College in 2015. The Bombers won the 2015 Empire 8 Tournament title for the first time since 2010 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Tournament semifinals. Ithaca posted a 31-5 overall record, featuring a 7-1 conference mark.
A 2015 Ithaca graduate, Williams played two seasons with the Bombers' men's tennis team before serving as a two-year captain of the club volleyball program. He earned a bachelor's degree in television/radio with a minor in coaching.
Williams joins a Syracuse coaching staff that is coming off a 22-14 season, and advanced to the NIVC Quarterfinals. The Orange will open their 2018 season Aug. 31 at the UConn Invitational against the University of New Hampshire.
