SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse tennis continues to display excellence on and off the court. The Orange earned ITA All-Academic Team honors for the 2017-18 season while Gabriela Knutson, Nicole Mitchell, Miranda Ramirez and Anna Shkudun garnered recognition as ITA Scholar-Athletes, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Tuesday, July 24.
The Orange, coming off a 17-8 season in which they earned their second-ever NCAA Tournament invitation, received the Team Academic Award for the second time in program history, having previously brought home the honor in 2015-16.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.0 scale).
The Orange's foursome of Knutson, Mitchell, Ramirez and Shkudun are the program's first ITA Scholar-Athletes since Nicole Mitcheu, Amanda Rogers, Komal Safdar and Valeria Salazar received the honor in 2015-16.
Knutson, a broadcast journalism major in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, finished the season ranked No. 8 nationally in singles, becoming the first Orange tennis player to earn All-America honors since Erica O'Neill in 1995. Knutson posted a record of 21-5 in singles action and reached the Round of 16 in the 2018 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship.
The first All-ACC First Team selection in program history, Knutson was 12-2 during conference play and was named to the All-ACC Academic Team for the second time in her career.
Mitchell, who was an information management and technology major in the School of Information Studies, capped her Syracuse career with a strong senior campaign, posting a 16-10 overall record across the fall and spring seasons. She notched a 3-0 mark in spring doubles action.
Ramirez, who is enrolled in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, recorded an 11-12 singles record and a 17-7 mark in doubles across both seasons. Paired with Knutson, she helped form one of the country's top doubles teams, finishing No. 8 nationally with a 16-4 record.
Shkudun, a graduate student in the School of Education, totaled 31 overall victories during the season, the second 30-win season of her career.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must be a varsity letterwinner, have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 for the current academic year and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
