Syracuse, N.Y. – Ten year's after playing in the program's first NCAA Final Four with her field hockey teammates, Kim (Coyle) Wingert is looking forward to returning to J.S. Coyne Stadium this fall to celebrate a team that meant so much to her. As a sophomore, Wingert started in all 24 games in 2008 scoring one goal and tallying one assist during the regular season. Fast forward 10 years and Wingert has traded playing hockey for playing mom to two young daughters. She's a working mom at that. Wingert has spent the past two and a half years building her career as a digital strategist and planner for Amazon.
"Going to Syracuse was by far one of the best decisions I have ever made," Wingert said. "I would never have been able to jump on to a top-ranked team and start straight out of high school but I was given the opportunity to learn and work my butt off at Syracuse. It totally paid off."
'Cuse posted a 22-2 record and reached the Final Four for the first time in program history in 2008. To commemorate the 10th anniversary Wingert and her teammates will return to campus for a weekend celebration of the milestone on September 21st..
"I remember walking away from that game [the NCAA semifinal] feeling devastated that we just lost," Wingert added. "But at the same time thinking that we'd played just about the best game we could have played as a team that day."
Wingert earned Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Mideast Region First Team honors as a junior and was a BIG EAST All-Academic Team honoree. She finished her Syracuse playing career after the 2010 season with 77 games played. She graduated with a dual degree in public relations and political science in 2011.
These days, Wingert says she is focused on her family, their brand new house in Ashburn, Va., and kicking her own butt in the gym when she has time.
"I married my husband, Andrew, in 2014 and we now have two amazing girls," Wingert said. "After living in Seattle for the past four years, we decided to move back east to be closer to our family. It has been great being closer to 'Cuse friends again."
Wingert works for Amazon in the global advertising department and is focused on campaign planning for most major business lines. Her team works directly with Amazon's Super Bowl add every year.
"I am currently on maternity leave so I am soaking up as much time as I can with my girls," Wingert added. "I am training for a half marathon in September. Though my 2-kilometer time isn't anywhere close to where it was in 2008, I am pushing an extra 50 pounds in a double-stroller when I hit the road so that has to count for something, right?."
The 2008 NCAA Final Four team will return to 'Cuse Sept. 21-23 when Syracuse hosts two home games. The Orange will play Pacific on Friday at 5:30 pm and Penn on Sunday for a 1 pm matinee. Additionally, the team will be recognized during Syracuse's football game in the Carrier Dome against Connecticut. If you plan to attend the 2008 Final Four 10th Anniversary Weekend, please RSVP to Vanessa Jecko (vejecko@syr.edu).
