No. 11 Syracuse faces No. 15 Stanford on Saturday when the Orange play their first road game of the 2018 field hockey season at 9 p.m. EST in Stanford, Calif. 'Cuse (2-0) is 8-0 against the Cardinal (0-2) and has played a nationally-ranked Stanford five times.
The Orange enter Saturday's matchup coming of a pair of wins at home to start the season. Senior Roos Weers earned Atlantic Coast Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors after scoring a goal in each of Syracuse's wins this season. Freshman Tess Queen leads the team in assists (2) having dished the helper on both of Weers' goals this season. Sophomore Kira Wimbert is second on the team in points (3) behind Weers (4). Sophomore goalkeeper Borg van der Velde holds a 2-0 record this year with a .900 save percentage and 0.64 goals against average.
Stanford will play its first home game of the season Saturday. The Cardinal lost its opener to defending national champion Connecticut, 0-3, last Saturday and was topped by No. 12 Northwestern, 2-3, in overtime the following day.
The two first met in 1997 when 'Cuse defeated Stanford 1-0. Last time they met, Syracuse won 3-1 on Sept. 11, 2016.
