ITHACA, N.Y. – Syracuse scored twice in a span of four minutes in the first half and defeated Cornell, 2-0, on Monday, Sept. 10 in Ithaca, N.Y. The win improves the Orange's record to 3-2.
Â
"Cornell has gotten off to a good start and they are a confident group, a hard-working group, and they pushed us all the way tonight," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "I'm very pleased with our group that they found a way to gut it out. The second half, we were stretched. We bent, but we didn't break. I'm happy for Hendrik (Hilpert), the defense and the whole team that we were able to get a shutout."
Â
HOW IT WAS DECIDED
Freshman Ryan Raposo started the scoring for Syracuse when he found the back of the net off an assist from fellow freshman Hilli Goldhar in the eighth minute. Four minutes later, the Orange added to their lead when Raposo served the ball into the box from the right side to graduate student Len Zeugner, who headed the ball into the back of the net for his first goal at Syracuse. Orange goalkeeper Hendrik Hilpert made five saves in the first half to keep the Big Red (3-1) off the scoreboard.
Â
Cornell was the more dangerous team in the second half, but Hilpert recorded three saves to record his first clean sheet of the season and 20th of his career. His eight total saves on the night was just one short of his career high set last year at No. 1 Wake Forest.
Â
OF NOTE
Hilpert is now the fourth goalkeeper in school history to have 20 or more shutouts in his career. The win was the 31st of his career, which ranks fourth on Syracuse's career leader list.
Â
Raposo finished with a career-high three points, giving him eight this season. That total ties him for the team lead in points. In addition, Raposo's four assists is tops on the squad.
