PRINCETON, N.J. - Freshman Sofya Treshcheva led the way for the Syracuse tennis team at the Princeton Invitational this weekend, winning all three of her singles matches and earning two doubles victories to help kick off the Orange's fall season.
"We are very pleased on how Maria, Dina, Libi and Sofya competed these past three days," head coach Younes Limam said. "The more matches we played, the better everyone got. They also dealt with adversity extremely well throughout all the matches. With this mindset, we can only see this team getting better and succeeding."
HOW IT WENT
The Orange opened the tournament Friday afternoon, first playing Temple in doubles before facing Penn in singles. Treshcheva, the freshman newcomer from Moscow, Russia, paired with senior Dina Hegab in the first doubles action of the weekend and defeated Temple's duo, 6-1. Seniors Libi Mesh and Maria Tritou teamed up to also win 6-4 in doubles play against Temple.
Later that Friday, Treshcheva defeated Penn's Marija Curnic in singles, 6-2, 6-4. Tritou and Mesh also picked up singles wins Friday against competitors from Penn.
Syracuse took on Penn in doubles to start the second day of action Saturday, earning wins on both courts. Treshcheva and Tritou won 6-2 while Hegab and Mesh won 6-1.Â
The Orange then played Princeton, who advanced to the NCAA Regionals last year after finishing with a 19-4 overall record, and were unable to record any doubles win. The Orange responded with three singles wins against Temple later Saturday afternoon, as Treshcheva earned her fourth victory of the weekend with a 6-1, 6-2 win against Temple's Chunan Xiang.
Syracuse closed out its weekend in New Jersey with four singles matches against host Princeton competitors Sunday. Treshcheva notched her fifth overall victory with a 2-6, 6-4 (10-8) win while Mesh earned Syracuse its other singles win against Princeton, defeating Grace Joyce by a score of 6-4, 6-3.
