
Golubovskaya, Orange Wrap Up Successful Weekend at Milwaukee Tennis Classic

MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Sofya Golubovskaya advanced to the quarterfinals in singles and made it through to the semifinals in doubles with her partner junior Guzal Yusupova, highlighting the Syracuse tennis team's successful three days at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in Milwaukee, Wisc.
"The ladies did a good job playing three very tough days of tennis," head coach Younes Limam said. "We definitely learned and improved in some areas this weekend. Gabi, Miranda, Sofya and Guzal depart Wisconsin better prepared for the season than when they arrived."
HOW IT WENT
Golubovskaya's strong weekend began on day one, when she earned her first singles win to advance to the Round of 32. The Moscow, Russia, native defeated Natalia Boltinskaya of FAU by the score of 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 to claim her spot in the next round.
Golubovskaya won 6-0, 6-1 in her Round of 32 match before recording a 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 victory in the singles Round of 16. Her three-match winning streak came to an end in the quarterfinals on day three, where she fell 6-7, 2-6.
Senior Gabriela Knutson made a run to the singles quarterfinals, as well. She opened her weekend with a straight-set win (6-2, 6-2) over Sidnee Lavatai of Utah State before recording a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3 victory in her Round of 32 match-up.
She won 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 in the singles Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals, where she lost 3-6, 1-6 to Silvia Ambrosio of Purdue.
Sophomore Miranda Ramirez won 6-4, 6-2 and 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 in her first two singles matches, but was eliminated from the tournament after a 4-6, 7-6, 3-6 loss in the Round of 16. Yusupova also won her first two singles matches (6-2, 6-2 and 7-5, 4-6, 6-1) before suffering a 2-6, 3-6 setback in the Round of 16.
The Orange's successful weekend continued in doubles action. Golubovskaya and Yusupova paired up and advanced to the semifinals. The duo won 8-3 and 8-5 in their first two matches, but were eliminated from the doubles tournament after losing 7-9 in the semis.
Knutson and Ramirez, who are the No. 4-ranked doubles pair in the Oracle/ITA Collegiate Tennis Division I Women's Preseason National Poll, lost 7-9 in their match and were eliminated.

Syracuse closes the month of September at the West Point Invitational in West Point, N.Y., Sept. 28-30. The Orange will also send qualifiers to Pacific Palisades, Calif., for the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, which begins Sept. 29 and concludes Oct. 7.
