
No. 12 Orange Defeat Penn 2-1 in Shootout

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Borg van der Velde stopped three Penn (4-4) strokes in Sunday's shootout to help lift No. 12 Syracuse to a 2-1 overtime win over the Quakers at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Syracuse won its third-straight game and improves to 6-3 on the season while Penn stands at 4-4 overall.
Emma Likly made her first career start in goal for the Orange, making one save in 35 minutes of action. Penn took the lead in the 25th minute when Julia Russo scored, unassisted, from the center of the circle. Both teams were even in shots in the first half tallying three a piece and Syracuse held a 2-1 edge in penalty corners.
Syracuse head coach Ange Bradley changed goalkeepers at halftime, inserting sophomore van der Velde. 'Cuse evened the score when freshman Laura Graziosi fired a shot from outside the circle and Chiara Gutsche was there to tip it in, tying the score 1-1.
Neither team was able to break through as regulation ended and the Orange headed to overtime for the second time in as many games. 'Cuse took three shots in the first overtime period but was unable to score on Penn goalkeeper Ava Rosati.
In the second overtime period both Kira Wimbert and Claire Webb were issued yellow cards 20 seconds apart which gave Penn a two-player advantage with seven players on the field to Syracuse's five four five minutes. The Orange successfully killed the two-person penalty and held off Penn's offense resulting in a 1-1 tie at the end of 90 minutes.
In the shootout, van der Velde stopped the first three Quaker strokes, while Webb and Roos Weers got crafty to net strokes for the Orange. Carolin Hoffmann secured the victory for Syracuse by crossing up Penn's Rosati and placing a shot perfectly in the goal for the 2-1 win.
Syracuse improves to 3-1 in overtime games this season. Gutsche's goal was her team-best sixth of the season while Graziosi picked up the third assist of her young career.
The Orange play their final game of September next Saturday at No. 1 North Carolina. Game time is set for 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra. 'Cuse returns home to Coyne Stadium Oct. 5 to host ACC foe Boston College at 5 p.m.
