GREENSBORO, N.C. – After helping Syracuse volleyball to a pair of wins against conference opponents over the weekend, freshman Polina Shemanova has been tabbed this week's ACC Freshman of the Week. Shemanova is honored for her performance from Sept. 17-23.
In the opening weekend of conference play, Shemanova led the Syracuse attack in both games. In the first ACC match of her career, she recorded a game-high 15 kills against Georgia Tech before adding 14 against Clemson. Her career-high 13 digs against the Tigers gave Shemanova her second double-double of the weekend and the sixth of the season.
Averaging 4.00 kills per set, Shemanova leads all ACC freshman and ranks third in the conference. In the pair of matches on the weekend, she had just five hitting errors and compiled a .324 hitting percentage. Shemanova leads Syracuse in both total kills and digs with 168 kills and 91 digs this season.
Shemanova has recorded double-digit kills in nine of her eight career matches, including a string of four consecutive 20+ kill performances earlier this season.
Syracuse opened conference play 2-0 for the first since 2015, including the 3-0 sweep over Georgia Tech. The 3-0 sweep is the first for 'Cuse in an ACC conference opener.
The Orange open a four-match road swing Friday, Sept. 28 against Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Syracuse is set to return home Oct. 12 as it hosts Miami for Pink Day.
