After opening Atlantic Coast Conference action 2-0, the Syracuse University volleyball team takes on Wake Forest and Duke in its first conference road test of the season. Syracuse (6-4, 2-0 ACC) plays at Wake Forest Friday, Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. and will travel nearby Duke Sept. 30 for a 1 p.m. match. Sunday's match will be broadcast live on the ACCNÂ Extra.Â
Â
THE MATCHUPS
Wake Forest (5-9, 0-2 ACC) enters the weekend coming off three-straight losses against West Virginia and a pair of conference opponents, Miami and Florida State. All five of Wake Forests' wins were during a five-game win streak from Sept. 7-15.
Â
The Demon Deacons enter the weekend looking to take their first set against an ACC opponent after being swept by both opponents last weekend. The Orange are undefeated all-time against Wake Forest, with a 6-0 record dating back to 2013.
Â
Duke (6-5, 0-2 ACC) also lost to Miami and Florida State in its opening weekend of conference play. The Blue Devils fired off six consecutive wins earlier this season earning victories over South Florida, LSU and Cincinnati. Syracuse is 3-5 all-time against Duke after taking both matches, 3-1, in 2017.
Â
Wake Forest and Duke each hold 3-3 home records as they host conference opponents for the first time in 2018.
Â
IN THE ACC
Syracuse opened ACC play last weekend with its first home matches of the season. The Orange swept Georgia Tech for a 3-0 victory before taking down Clemson, 3-1. Freshman Polina Shemanova led Syracuse in both matches with 15 and 14 kills, respectively, earning ACC Freshman of the Week honors.
Â
BLOCKING PROWESS
Syracuse has proven itself as one of the nation's premier blocking teams, ranking in the top-20 nationally in blocks per set for each of the last three seasons. The 2018 season looks to be no different as the Orange rank 12th in the nation and lead the ACC with 2.82 blocks per set.
Â
The Syracuse blockers will go up against Wake Forests', who rank last in the ACC in blocks per set. Amber Witherspoon and Santita Ebangwese lead the Orange with 1.33 and 1.21 blocks per set, respectively. Syracuse is the only school to have multiple blockers in the top-five among the ACC.
Â
UP NEXT
The Orange remain on the road for another set of ACC matchups. Syracuse will head to undefeated Pittsburgh Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. before taking on Virginia Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.
