
No. 10 Orange Lose ACC Opener in Overtime

Charlottesville, Va. – No. 10 Syracuse began Atlantic Coast Conference play with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to No. 8 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., Friday afternoon. It marks the first loss of the season for the Orange field hockey squad (3-1 overall, 0-1 ACC), who returns home to face the No. 1 Connecticut Huskies Sunday at 1 p.m.
It was a defensive battle in the first half that included a 45-minute weather delay and resulted in a 0-0 stalemate at halftime. Both teams heightened their offensive attack in the second half. Syracuse nearly doubled its shot total recording eight in the second half, while Virginia (3-1, 1-0) took seven shots in the second half. Syracuse dominated the second half with five corners, while UVA was held to one.Â
Freshman Laura Graziosi gave the Orange a 1-0 advantage off a corner in the 63rd minute of play. Tess Queen tallied her third assist of the season on the play. Less than a minute later the Cavaliers evened the score on a shot by Makayla Gallen. The score held through the end of regulation.
The Orange held a 2-1 advantage in shots in the first overtime period but was unable to find the back of the goal on either attempt. In the second overtime period, it was a back and forth battle until UVA's Greer Gill scored on a fast break to end the game in favor of the Cavaliers. Grace Wallis assisted on both of Virginia's goals.
Syracuse outshot the Cavaliers 16-14 and held a 7-4 advantage on penalty corners. Borg van der Velde made seven saves in 82 minutes of action in her first loss of the season.
Virginia improves to 6-3 all-time versus the Orange and has won each of the last three meetings.
'Cuse returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 9, when the Orange host defending national champion and top-ranked UConn at 1 p.m. It's Doggy Day at J.S. Coyne Stadium and fans can earn 1,000 points in fan rewards for attending.
The game will be live on ACC Network Extra with Tyler Aki and Syracuse field hockey alum Tracy (Larkin) Parker on the call.
