SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Senior Kelli Rowswell scored her team-leading third goal of the season in Syracuse's 5-1 loss to Colgate on Saturday in front of 430 fans at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Raiders (4-2-1) jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the second period before Rowswell put Syracuse (0-7) on the board.
Â
"We know that we're capable of winning," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "That's the worst part of being 0-7, we know that we're capable. Quite often we're guilty of being our own worst enemy. Whether it's taking an undisciplined penalty, being undisciplined around the net, or not being disciplined enough to move the puck to the right person on the power play. I know we're capable of being a real good team, but until we figure out some of our trouble areas, it's going to be more of the same. It falls on my shoulders. The lack of discipline is a direct reflection of me so we have to get better from this and learn from it."
Â
How it Happened
Syracuse sustained Colgate's attack through most of the first period until Coralie Larose scored the first goal for the Raiders on a power play with less than three minutes left. Syracuse junior goalie Allison Small turned away 15 of the 16 shots she faced in the first period as the Raiders outshot the Orange 16-6 in the first 20 minutes.
Â
In the second period, the Raiders scored three goals, one by Noemi Neubauerova less than two minutes in, and then tallied two scores within 40 seconds to take a 4-0 lead. Malia Schneider recorded a goal on an assist from Danielle Serdachny at the 8:13 mark of the period, and then Allyson Simpson scored 38 seconds later. Nuebauerova and Shelby Wood assisted on Simpson's goal.
Â
Rowswell's shorthanded goal with 6:25 left in the second period cut the Syracuse deficit to three, 4-1, and staved off the shutout. Colgate's Kaitlyn O'Donohoe scored the final goal of the game on a Raiders power play with 10:15 left in the game.
