Syracuse, N.Y. – A career-high 11 saves in a road win at No. 3 UConn made the case for Syracuse freshman goalkeeper Sarah Sinck to earn Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Sinck guided the Orange to a 1-1 week on the road losing to No. 13 Boston College, 2-1, and defeating No. 3 UConn, 1-0, in a double overtime shootout. She made three saves in the loss to the Eagles Friday night and bounced back with a career high 11 saves in Sunday's win over the Huskies.
The Eindhoven, Netherlands, native kept the Huskies off the board on 13 penalty corner opportunities in a game which the Orange were outshot 24-8. Nine of her career-high 11 saves were after the first half.
She improved to 6-0 in overtime games in her young career and made 14 saves while facing 33 shots over the two game stretch. Sunday's win was the second shutout of the season for Sinck, who leads the ACC in saves per game (3.5).
This marks the first ACC weekly award for the freshman and first of the season for the Orange. Sinck shares the honor with Louisville goalkeeper Hollynn Barr.
Sinck and the Orange return to J.S. Coyne for the final two games of the regular season on Friday and Sunday vs. Wake Forest and Cornell, respectively. Both games will be streamed live on ACCNX. Admission and parking to all Syracuse field hockey home games are free.
