Orange Rally for 3-1 Victory Over Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Syracuse ice hockey extended its unbeaten streak against Penn State to 20 games Sunday afternoon as the Orange rallied to a 3-1 victory in State College, Pa. Senior forward Savannah Rennie opened scoring less than five minutes into the game, the goal her 50th career point. Junior defender Jessica DiGirolamo scored the game-winner in the dying moments of the third period, and sophomore forward Abby Moloughney put a staple on the day with her first goal of the year to help Syracuse claim its second College Hockey America (CHA) victory of the season.
"Obviously an important two points for us today," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Our power play struggled all game until DiGi buried the winner. Abby did a great job on the faceoff for the assist, and also added the insurance tally to put the game away."
How it happened
The Orange (3-11-1, 2-1-1 CHA) opened scoring just five minutes into the first period when Rennie coasted in from the right dot and beat Penn State (3-7-4, 0-3-1 CHA) goalie Chantal Burke on the blocker side. Burke appeared to make the initial stop, but the save was bobbled and Syracuse celebrated as the puck slid over the goal line.
Â
Rennie's goal seemed to be all the Orange needed as Penn State had trouble finding the back of the net despite putting 20 shots on frame in the first two periods, but the Nittany Lions rallied late in the third period, and Shea Nelson tied things at 1-1 with five minutes to go.
Â
The tie didn't last long as DiGirolamo wound up from the right point with two minutes to go and shelved one blocker side for the game-winner. Moloughney then put a stamp on the game as she scored an empty netter to put the Orange up 3-1. Redshirt senior captain Lindsay Eastwood assisted on the final goal, the assist giving her her 50th career point.
