SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Orange came out strong with energy in their legs, but their efforts weren't enough as Syracuse fell, 4-1, to No. 3 Cornell Tuesday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. 'Cuse scored its lone goal early in the first period off a clapper from junior Victoria Klimek, her fourth of November, but a late push from the Big Red gave Cornell its eighth victory of the year. Syracuse travels to Maryland Heights, Mo. next week to take on Lindenwood in the final series of 2019.
Â
"I think we've been a little inconsistent for the last three weekends, so the message coming out of the locker room tonight was to have energy," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "I'd give them a solid B for their performance tonight. We gave up three goals, not counting the empty netter, but they had good effort and enthusiasm. There's still some areas that we have to work like staying out of the penalty box, but our kids did a real great job on the penalty kill. We still have to find ways to improve and refine our game."
Â
How it happened
Cornell opened scoring five minutes into the game when Finley Frechette redirected a shot by Jaime Bourbonnais. Klimek and the Orange responded two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1, the helper coming from redshirt senior captain Lindsay Eastwood.
Â
From there a tense goalie battle ensued as Syracuse's Ady Cohen and Cornell's Lindsay Browning turned away shot after shot. The Big Red finally got one through in the final minutes of the second period when Kristin O'Neill sent a rocket past Cohen's blocker.
Â
Cornell's third goal came five minutes into the third period from Bourbonnais, and the night was capped off by an empty netter in the final two minutes by Paige Lewis. Syracuse held Cornell to just two shots on five power play opportunities.
