DURHAM, N.C. – A nine-run fourth inning highlighted Syracuse's (2-5) huge offensive showing in its five-inning, 11-1, victory over Penn State (3-5) Saturday afternoon. The Orange scored 11 runs on nine hits, with seven different players notching a hit.
'Cuse concludes the ACC/Big Ten Challenge tomorrow, Feb. 17, with a 10 a.m. matchup against #24/RV Indiana.
In her first career start, freshman Jessica Skladal was one of two 'Cuse players to record two hits. Neli Casares-Maher also notched two, marking her first multi hit game of the season. Alicia Hansen batted in four runs, including a bases clearing triple in the fourth, that tied her career-high. Hansen's triple is the seventh of her career, moving her into a tie for fifth all-time at Syracuse.
The Orange's offense was backed up in the circle as sophomore Sophie Dandola (1-2) had her best outing of the season. She allowed one run in five innings with three strikeouts and no walks.
Syracuse wasted little time in the first inning as Gabby Teran took a leadoff walk before stealing her first base of the season. Hansen laid down a sac bunt giving Teran enough time to score for the early 1-0 lead. Penn State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first, but the Orange defense recorded back-to-back putouts, keeping the Nittany Lions off the board.
The Orange tacked on a run in the second inning, before Penn State scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third on an RBI double from Tori Dubois. Syracuse headed to the top of the fourth with a 2-1 lead, before its nine run inning broke open the game.
'Cuse came out firing in the fourth inning with back-to-back singles from Casares-Maher and Skladal. Nothing slowed down from there, as Gabby Teran reached on a fielders' choice and all runners advanced safely. Hansen's bases clearing triple jumped the Orange ahead 6-1. Two pitches' later, Hansen ran home on a Penn State wild pitch. A pair of hits from Bryce Holmgren and Alexis Kaiser helped reload the bases before Toni Martin drew a bases loaded walk, scoring the seventh run of the game. The line kept moving for Syracuse thanks to Penn State's second error of the inning that scored two more runs. A sac bunt from Skladal and Teran's single brought in the eighth and ninth run of the frame.
Dandola remained in the circle for the bottom of the fifth, looking for the final three outs to secure the run-rule victory. After striking out the leadoff batter, Dandola gave up a single to left field but the Orange quickly turned a double play on the next batter ending the game.
