LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior Emily Hawryschuk recorded a season-high seven points to lead No. 4/4 Syracuse to a 14-7 victory at Louisville on Sunday in the finale of a three-game road trip. The Orange improve to 8-2 overall, 2-1 in ACC play.
"I'm happy with the way the team stepped up," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "It was great to play the entire roster and get everyone into the game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse's offense was clicking from the opening whistle. The Orange took the lead for good 1:15 into the game when freshman Megan Carney scored on an assist from classmate Meaghan Tyrrell. Hawryschuk followed with back-to-back goals to push the lead to 3-0. Louisville briefly halted the offensive outburst with a goal by Alex McNicholas at the 21:13 mark, but that would be its last goal until nearly midway through the second half.
The Orange ended the first half with four unanswered goals to take a 7-1 halftime lead. Redshirt juniors Mary Rahal and Morgan Alexander and senior Nicole Levy all found the back of the net before Carney scored with 1.4 seconds on the clock to give Syracuse a six-goal advantage.
The scoring barrage continued after intermission as the 'Cuse netted five straight goals to take a 12-1 lead with 19:03 on the clock. Hawryschuk scored three goals, while Carney and senior Natalie Wallon had one goal each during the run.
Tessa Chad ended the Cardinals' scoring drought of more than 30 minutes of play when she found the back of the net at the 16:34 mark. Alexander netted back-to-back goals, both on assists from freshman Sierra Cockerille, to give Syracuse its largest lead of the day at 14-2 before Louisville posted the final five goals of the game for the 14-7 final.
OF NOTE
Levy's goal at the 12:51 mark in the first half was the 200th career point for the East Islip, N.Y. native. She becomes just the 10th player in program history to reach the milestone. Levy ranks 10th in career points (200) and goals (131) on Syracuse's all-time leader lists. In addition, she ranks ninth in career assists (69).
Hawryschuk posted a season-high five goals, while Alexander recorded her third hat trick of the season. While the offense was rolling, Syracuse goalkeeper Asa Goldstock continued her stellar play in goal. She made nine saves, caused one turnover and picked up two ground balls.
