SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The No. 4 Syracuse women's lacrosse team (9-2) won its third straight game, defeating Harvard (4-4) by the score of 15-6 at the Carrier Dome Tuesday. The Orange scored seven of the game's first nine goals to grab the lead and never looked back.
The game marked the Orange's fourth in the last 10 days. Syracuse spent spring break on the road, visiting No. 2 Maryland, No. 16 Florida and Louisville. The Orange went 3-1 during the stretch.
"It's been a long 10 days," said Syracuse head coach Gary Gait. "That's our fourth game in 10 days. I thought it was a solid effort by our team. I've been saying it all year that our defense has been outstanding, giving us multiple opportunities on the offensive end. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse notched the game's first four goals as Emily Hawryschuk, Meaghan Tyrrell, Mary Rahal and Sierra Cockerille each scored to give the Orange 4-0 advantage with 20:54 left in the opening half. Harvard responded at 19:31 mark with a goal by Hannah Keating. The Crimson's Katie Muldoon followed with a goal of her own to cut the Orange lead to 4-2.
Syracuse took back the momentum on consecutive goals by Tyrrell, Morgan Alexander and Vanessa Costantino to pull in front, 7-2. Harvard added another goal in the half, but Syracuse ended the period with three more scores to take a 10-3 advantage at the break.
In the second half, the Orange opened with four straight goals, including two by Hawryschuk, to extend their run to 7-0 and secure a commanding 14-3 lead.
Harvard pushed back with three unanswered goals to make the score 14-6, but Syracuse struck last as Rilea Fusco netted her first goal of the season with 1:09 remaining to close the scoring.
OF NOTE
Hawryschuk set a new career high with 10 draw controls. Syracuse dominated on the draw, winning 16-of-22 (.727) for the game. Syracuse improved to 7-0 this year when winning more draws than their opponents.
Alexander tallied her fourth career hat trick. Her three goals, paired with Hawryschuk's game-high four tallies, powered the Orange attack.
Nicole Levy matched her career high with four assists. Levy previously dished out four assists against Loyola in 2016.
Keeley MacAfee led Harvard with four points, including three of the Crimson's six goals.
UP NEXT
The Orange return to ACC play on Saturday, March 23 when they host No. 12 Notre Dame at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse. Opening draw is scheduled for noon and the game will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.Â
